I have decided to post this page in order to centralize all the options that have been/will be made available for the Connections theme. So, if you have ported the theme to a different platform or made a customization that you are willing to share with people, please post your comments on this page. This will make it easy for people who are looking for ported versions and other options to find them all in one single place. I will try to list and put up for download some of those that have already been sent to me as soon as I can find the time to do so. Please don’t post questions in this entry, it’s meant to be a clean list of resources only.
DOWNLOAD THE CONNECTIONS THEME HERE.
Thanks!

Hi, I really love your connections theme and have used it on my blog.
However, I made a lot of modifications to the theme. You can see the list here
This modified version will be made available at the above link, with full credit to you of course.
You can also do the same if you feel so.

Hello! I just wanted to pass along my first postnuke site – using your beautiful Connections theme. I made some modifications to it – and I am very pleased on how it came out. Thank you so much for providing this theme to the community.

Here’s my site. I made a few adjustments, like changing the header picture, and modifying the way it displays links (I couldn’t find any other way for Wordpress to show the description as well as the category.)
I love the way the theme is set up. Great work.
July 17th, 2005 at 1:52 am
hey, I’m using a hacked-and-cracked version of Connections. I fixed the static width and made it fluid (not necessarily an improvement, but just to give me some options on how to view it). I removed much of the images on the site, replaced them with my own banner. I liked the diagonal stripe background, so I made them the background of every individual post, as opposed to the post float. I also devised a CSS sytleswitcher so the 3 or 4 people that read my site can change from green to red. Connections is a smooth looking theme to begin with. It’s made much better by the author graciously inluding a readme.html file in the mold of the theme. This was very handy in editing and modding the design to my liking from my own hard drive.
I actually do have a question about Connections though. Where is the comments.php or where would I go to edit what would be the comments.php file? I’m trying to install bot-check to put in a graphics renderer to stop spam. Everything references to a comments.php file that appears not to exist in connections. What file would it be in? Or, if there is no specific comments.php, does Wordpress defer to the default settings under its default theme? Am I missing something? Help would be greatly appreciated before i start blindly editing and screwing things up.
Gracias por eso.

Hi Patricia,
Just switched over from using a modified Scudly theme to a tweaked version of Connections. It’s a beautiful theme – thankyou. I’ll probably be tweaking it some more as I go along, but it’s a fantastic base to work from and looks really crisp and clean.
It’s eerie that you live in Brazil – the tunnel graphic looks very much like a tunnel we have over here on one highway in Sydney Australia !
Thanks again

Patty,
Thanks very much for your work on Connections. It’s a great theme and I’m in process of learning more about CSS so can modify it. Since Connections is so cool, there isn’t much I need or want to do.
Thanks again.

Like everyone else, I’d like to say thanks for creating Connections. I’ve just been setting a new Wordpress blog up, and I’ve used an edited version with most of the background graphics taken off and the colours tweaked slightly. As someone who had never done any WP hacking before, Connections was a great starting point for me. My version’s at http://www.symbolicforest.com/blog/

I have changed the colors and the order in the sidebar (also deleted one box).
You can find it at

Posting must be an indication that like the Connections theme. Made a few modifications to the sidebar and header. I really like the colours just the way they are. While the title image is ok, I do want to find something else. Not sure where to even begin looking for another image that nicely matches the existing Connections colours.

October 19th, 2005 at 11:02 am
Some customizations to the connections theme. Shortened the header. And add another sub-header. Had to actually re-lern CSS to do that. Etc Etc.
.
This theme actually made me play with then learn and then use PHP to call another funtion to add another in my sidebar — keeping all the ‘objective orientedness’ of wordpress of course. It is a wonderfull piece of code to start off with.
The sheer number of ppl using/ripping connections theme is evidence eneough of its popularity. And of cos, I believe like most of you, that my customization of this them is the best. heheheh.
I figure you all can relate??
Really enjoying the whole open-source, play-at-ur-own-rish thingy thingy thing about all of this.
peace n pray
M.

Hi, can anyone teach me how to customise this theme?
October 30th, 2005 at 4:16 pm
I really like Connections. I first chose it because I wanted a picture in the site heading. I know a lot about HTML but not much about php and css, so I decided Connections would be the easiest theme to hack.
Since then, I’ve changed fonts and colors, broken the link list into categories, added some plugins, and made some other customizations using trial-and-error.
I’m quite happy with Connections, its simple elegance, and its flexibility.

I moved from Blogger to WordPress, after many months of anticipating the move, around a month or so ago. I will eventually design my own presence, but needed something fully-featured and elegant out of the box. Connections fit the bill completely.
Today, I decided to hack around with it a little more than I had before, throwing a few revised graphics at the underlying and unchanged structure. It’s an immature styling, but I figured I needed to differentiate my place from the hoardes of people making use of Connections, if only superficially.
Well done.
November 12th, 2005 at 7:15 am
I did my own version of Connections (modified graphics/color scheme/elements) for a new blog at http://www.mhsymp.com/, and I must admit your design was a pleasure to work with. This was really my first experience with WordPress, and having quality work to use as a foundation was a true treat!
Many thanks for your work, I can’t wait to see the new version.

Like many others, I’m using another image for the top: a macro photo of some dandelion seeds in my (green) carpet. The text visibility is far worse, I admit, but nonetheless I think it fits Connections well
you can see for yourself in my blog.
The xcf is available as public domain. It may be interesting to gimpers, since I’ve created separated layers over the original top image.

If you want to replace the main banner image, I made a master file in Fireworks that has everything in layers, so its really easy to drop in a new image, and change the colour or gradient of the bar above that. The FireWorks file (layered png) should also import into Photoshop etc ok.
Download it at: http://www.MindSpaceSolutions.com/demos/connections-top-FireWorks-Master.png
You may also want to add a Colour fill of the green theme colour – set it only adjust hue though, and maybe 33% transparency.
You can see the result of this at http://www.MindSpaceArt.com/blog
July 7th, 2006 at 4:38 am
Here’s my humble version. I chose a banner that softened everything up and used more of the red as the accent. I think next up will be a color conversion to some kind of light grey/blue theme.

Hi Patricia,
Just wanted to let you know what a great theme you’ve created here and congratulations on winning the “Grand Poobah” award last year for the WordPress theme competition. I’ve ported Connections to the Coppermine Photo Gallery so folks with WordPress & Coppermine can now use a common theme. I know there are a few folks who are using this theme in both now so you’re branching out with Connections! Here’s a direct link to the demo page.
Cheers!

I began to adapt the connections theme for punBB. You can see it here.
This adaptation is not perfect, as I know nearly nothing about CSS ( I just read a tutorial today) , it’s quick and dirty , but it works for me:
- background color is not accurate under the header block
- the CSS file may be cleaned up a bit ( I made some trials before achieving the final result)
Feel free to dowload it and improve it !
Downloat it !
PS : in main.tpl , set the URL fo the header image

I am a rank beginner with WP and your theme. Can anyone tell me where to go to edit the theme so that I can add my Blogroll etc. down the RH side?
Thanks,
Al
April 28th, 2007 at 2:24 pm
For Al:
Placement to the blogroll can be controlled by editing the sidebar.php file in the connections directory. It’s not a setting from the dashbord.
You need to open the file in a text editor such as KEdit and edit the raw php. It’s really not all that difficult (I was a beginner two years ago myself). Just back up the files before you edit them. (KEdit does that automatically, but I prefer to select the names of the backup files myself.)
If you go to mysite and email from the email link there, I’ll be happy to shoot you a copy of my sidebar.php file.

Hi Patti
Thanks for a great theme in conections.
I recently sponsored a young lad (15) who is trying very hard to build a career as a motorcycle racer and part of my contribution was to build and host a blog for him.
I have used the connections them with a change of header image and he is over the moon with the result, please take a look anyone who is interested here: http://www.jesstrayler.com
As you will see he is doing really well and posts to the blog regularly.
I do have a query….why is it that the post title and the sidebar links look great in firefox but are really small in IE? if anyone knows and can tell me how to fix it I would really appreciate it, I guess it’s in the css?

The port can be found here.

Hi,
Interesting, very light and delicate theme.
Found a port of it at http://blog.eldoras.com/ (its author claims to be the designer of the theme, but this level of similarity isn’t likely to be accidental…) Anyway, if anyone need a port of your theme for JoggerPL (http://jogger.pl) or maybe even eJogger (http://www.jabberstudio.org/projects/ejogger/project/view.php – for JoggerPL is its Polish clone), there it is.

I am using this theme on my blog which is a journal called Blink of an eye. I am a one month old blogger, but love using WordPress and really like your theme.
Thanks.

Hi Patricia.
Just a quick word of thanks for the effort you have put into this theme. Several of my clients have chosen your theme for their blogs, and I find the style a delight, very classy looking, and a pleasure to redesign the header graphic for theme continuity.
Here’s one example:
