Podcasts and a new version of Connections soon
Posted by Patricia Müller under Blogs and Blogging , Themes , WordPress | 10:18 am[58] Comments
I’m hooked on podcasts – well, who isn’t right? I was thinking here that it will be really, really great when we can record our comments as well, something like “commentcasts” – or technically would these be called podcasts just the same? Anyway, that would be nice, I know I for one would like to hear the voices behind the comments. Just a thought, after no updates in a month!!! Gee…
In other news, Sadish and I will be working on a new version of Connections soon, making adjustments here and then, but I don’t want to get into details just yet. One thing I can tell you though, is that I will release at least another color scheme of Connections with a different top image when the new version is ready. Connections has become more popular than I could ever immagine and this is my way to say thank you to everyone who chose to use the theme and, of course, to give people at least another option, since not everyone can customize the theme enough to make it look unique. But before I decide on a color scheme, I’d like to see what base color would appeal most to people, so if you could spare a minute to leave a comment letting me know your opinion, I will surely appreciate it.
Here are a few examples of Connections using different color schemes:
http://www.pink-frog.net
http://www.sinestesia.co.uk (my blog in portuguese, not really customized in colors, but still a modified version.)
http://goringe.net/theology/
http://www.imightbeinatree.com/blog/
http://www.billvanloo.com/blog/
I’ve seen a lot more, but I’d have to search for them.
I keep thinking that I should make the new color scheme as basic as possible, that will make it easy for people to make any top image fit without fighting with the rest of the site. But, well, I’d still like to hear your opinion.

Connections is excellent. I used it on my blog http://minatsu.speckz.org/ with very little modifications! Thank you Patricia and Sadish!

I made some very mild color changes and took away most of the graphics (just because I like graphics-lite sites). Check out http://cathcoll.net if you’re interested.

Hi all,
My blog uses Connections and I love it. However, an increasing number of people are reporting abnormally small font size. I’ve detected it on a Windows XP/IE 6.0 computer (see screen shot):
http://personales.ya.com/pgouvila/connections.jpg
The only way I found to make the blog readable for those people is to set the browser to override website fonts. But then the font is too large, and a large number of sites are affected.
http://personales.ya.com/pgouvila/connections.jpg
I wonder if anyone has detected and fixed this problem. I’d appreciate some feedback.
August 20th, 2005 at 7:10 pm
I’m sorry, the second link should be this one:
http://personales.ya.com/pgouvila/connections2.jpg
I must point out that the problem not only affects headlines. Comments are unreadable when this happens.

I love the connections theme. I use with slight modifications for my site . I have also created a connections coppermine theme (though a very quick and dirty implementation) and use that for my gallery. I love it. Thanks.

I use connections for not only my blog, but my whole site. I’ve customized the header pic though. Thanks for such a great design

I dig the green! A nice calm blue one might look nice, or maybe a soft brown?

Hello. Connections is certainly a great theme and you deserve all the credit and recognition that you have received. You asked for suggestions, for the new version, and I have a couple. First, since the mid 80’s there have been Javascripts that allow you (webmaster/blogmaster) or vistors to change the background colors. Taking that a step further by using the concept of alternate style sheets I’m sure you could accomodate several font/color styles for those who want an easy interface. I haven’t seen a theme like that but I’m sure you can do it. Second, instead of a static picture, how about rotating pictures ala Mike Cohen’s Random Image theme? Good luck with the new version.

I am using a modified version of your theme at my blog as well.
I commented on the wrong post before sorry.
August 26th, 2005 at 11:24 am
Hi, i too loved your theme the moment i laid eyes on it. I made some changes in the colour as well…
August 27th, 2005 at 10:26 pm
When is the new version most likely to be released? I’m planning to rebuild in some way to suit my needs and don’t know whether to wait for the news version or not. If the changes are just going to be cosmetic, there would be no need for me to wait, because I want to make a major rebuild :] Gonna give you a sign when I’m finished… Great theme btw

Hello,
First I will thank for this wonderfull template, but i got a problem. I tried to change the top banner that is a car, I changed to one to my own the same size and everything, I changed to the same name as top.jpg
but still is not changing the top to their default what I should make?
August 30th, 2005 at 2:29 pm
I like all the variations provided by both you and your guests. Your design really inspires elegance, it seems.
I think I’m most partial to the reddish and brownish ones, though I like ‘em all.

Thank you for the beautiful theme! I have installed “connections” for my newly relaunched blog, Glosses, and I’m very happy with it. I will probably modify the color scheme quite a bit. Personally I would love to see a version in a neutral palette, like your Portuguese weblog or “I might be in a tree”.

This template rocks!!
September 4th, 2005 at 12:09 am
I’m new to blogging. Installing the theme was a snap – although I had to make some tweaks (who doesn’t?). Also, when I first saw it, I just said “Yes, this it itâ€.
I’m looking forward to doing additional tweaks, but I like it as it is too.

Great theme! I’m using it for http://www.rebron.org and http://www.ironteam.net
I’d love a dark blue/blue theme or blue with tan to match my car:

Did I mention I work for Mozilla?
Maybe a Connections/Firefox theme would be cool too. Yeah?

I try your theme Connection on my website and when I open the gallery2, don’t work
September 12th, 2005 at 1:54 am
Hello,
I just started to set up my own blog today, and imho your theme is the best I’ve seen so far. Regarding the changing picture mentioned above, I did as follows:
I removed the reference of “top.jpg” in the style sheet and added some code in header.php, at the very top of the file. See
http://test30114.test-account.com/ (be quick, will be deleted in 5 days) and at intelligent.de after that period for more details. I tried to put the code here, but this comment field actually interpreted some of it, instead of just displaying it. And I wasn’t allowed to insert the pic with the code in here neither.
This gives 5 rotating pictures. Thanks again for such a great theme!
Regards,
Stefan

September 14th, 2005 at 9:35 pm
I did a little hack of this template too, and you can find the result on
http://www.wisnaes.com/
I finally managed to change the order of the things in the sidebar. But I would love to have a calendar instead of the month by month box. How can I do that?
September 17th, 2005 at 6:16 am
Got the calendar done as well. Now I just need to find a way to center the content in one box in the sidebar.

I’ve used some slight modifications but I will probably do more in the future as I switch headers. Keep up posted on color theme switches, I like that idea!
September 20th, 2005 at 7:09 pm
Yeah…
Mine too @ http://hiutale.org … The actual modding isn’t painless but it can be done. I just noticed that you had added stuff in the index.php which would actually go to sidebar.php and I was a bit distracted by the fact, but then I managed to understand figure it out…
Then I noticed that you didn’t have the calendar id in the css at all.
Otherwise I really like your design and I was happy to to modify it.
Although I usually don’t like doing it

Heres my heavily modified connections;
http://www.blog.swedishoriginals.com
Loved the theme the moment I laid eyes on it, new I could work it up into something that suited my blog.
The current theme on your theme is Fall, so future plans are for a Winter, Spring and Summer with theme changer (so visitors can see sweden in all four season!).
Love your blog by the way.

I modified the top image – still working on changing the font color for that top picture – can’t see it well – A friend of mine helped me tweak it.
I love the clean look and the soothing color. I am redoing my whole website to match it, I think.

Hello, your connections theme is very clean indeed! I myself prefer that the links inside the sidebar can be shown under ‘categories’ and the descriptions are only shown when the visitor place his cursor on it.
Somemore, can you create a header and footer template in order to let us edit them more simply?

Oops, I just found out that there are header and footer templates, sorry for incovenience.

Connections is excellent work. It’s the backbone of the priusownersgroup. Thanks!
And I really look forward to seeing you do a different version.
Have you ever considered doing a three column version?
Anyway and most seriously, thanks.

I liked ‘Connections’ so much when I was looking for a theme for my weblog that it was an easy choice as a base theme for my own site. And I’m a web developer myself; I just couldn’t do better!
I’ve made quite a few modifications though, beyond the colour changes which are obvious. See if you can spot them all.
And thanks for a great theme. Happy New Year!

Hi, for Connections 2, I think I would like shades of blue, like http://oceaninformatics.ucsd.edu/ . In fact that’s exactly what I’m looking for. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Right now, I am configuring default connection theme with many of new addons. I have just implemented collapsable sidebar Heads. Soon you will many more.
Eagerly waiting for Connection 2.0

I am in the midst of modding it as well. Any comments are welcome, per usual. Thanks for providing such a great template!
