I need serious help finding a name for my web development agency. This is the weirdest thing: I have clients and don’t have a name!!!!!!! I’ve been on it for over 6 months and I can’t come up with a name that:
- is creative and strong without losing identity with the industry
- is suitable in 2 different languages at least: Portuguese and English
- has actual meaning in itself but doesn’t sound like a standard over-used name such as “e-solutions”, “liquid-design”, etc…
It’s really hard and being such a perfectioniost I won’t settle for just any name. I don’t know if someday my agency will be very big, but I have to keep this possibility in mind – and this affects how I name it too.
So I gave this some thought and decided to post this to see if any of you guys can give me some ideas, insights, etc…
Here are some guidelines I’m trying to follow:
I can’t have a name that implies I’m just simply a design firm. I do more than that. It’s a multidisciplinary business that involves strategy, information architecture, usability, branding, etc. I also can’t have a name that is easilly pronounceable in english but not in portuguese (and the other way around). Words like “throughout”, “thoughtful”, “world”, “brought” and such won’t do. Names that are “overly creative” like “paint the monkey” or “banana pixels” might be memorable but, well, would you hire someone from “banana pixels”, to make your corporate website? So, you get the idea. I don’t mind having a name that is not self-explanatory as I can always use other words attached to it, such as “interactive” (i.e.: beehive intreractive, where “beehive” implies hard work and “interactive” identifies the type of business), as long as the first word is strong enough, holds some kind of suitable concept and sounds believable and trustworthy as in “I can trust these people with my website”.
So, PLEASE, help me out here if you have any insights or ideas?

This’ll likely be of no help at all, but I wanted to brag about the cool name I named a former company: “Ascena.”

Oh, there are some pretty good ideas here! Thanks to all of you who took the time to help me out!!!
Keep them coming. So far I really like Insight Interactive (although I think there’s a brazilian agency with this name), Design Matters (although I’d make it Web Matters, but very good!!!), Form and Function (conceptually speaking) and Webaholics.

SophosNext, Sophos listens like sophisticated and software at same time, and Next carries you to think about evolution. What do you think of this? I expect to have helped.

Whats wrong with Vanilla Mist? Its interesting, unique, and it looks like you have already started building a brand.

mmm… that gives me an idea, maybe I could call it plain Mist. Sounds good, although I might not be able to resiter this name, unless I add another word to it, such as mistmedia.com our mistinteractive.com, webmist.com, etc…
I have also thought about Abstraction and (above) Web Matters, but there seems to be a company already using this name in the same industry. Same for “Look and Feel”, which I like a lot. Should it e be a problem if I register Abstraction using my country’s second level domain? (top level are not available) I mean, since abstraction.com/.net/.org are not available then have something ending in .com.br?

Phil, this is one of my favorite drinks too, but I can’t use Guaraná, as it’s a trademark where I live.
But thanks, if I didn’t live here, it would be great!!!

Hello Patricia,
I also like the idea of just using the work MIST. Though looking at options for domain names it appears such as mist.us.com, mist.eu.com, mist.de.com, mist.uk.com etc. are available. This may be an option..? If not something to think about…
Good Luck!
